About This Destination

Bukit Meriam Fort is a historic fortification perched on the coastal fringe of Kota Kuala Muda in the District of Kuala Muda, Kedah. Constructed during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin Mu'azzam Shah (1710–1778), this fort formed part of the broader Kedah coastal defense system designed to protect the kingdom from external threats, including incursions from Siam and Aceh. The fort held significant strategic importance due to its location along the bustling maritime trade route of the Straits of Malacca. In its heyday, Bukit Meriam served as a surveillance and defensive outpost, monitoring merchant vessel movements and repelling hostile forces from encroaching upon Kedah's coastal territories. The physical structure of Bukit Meriam Fort was built using local materials and traditional Malay fortification design. Its presence reinforced Kota Kuala Muda's status as one of the most vital administrative and trading centres in Kedah's history — a legacy that underpins the very use of "Kota" (meaning "fort" or "city") in the locality's name. Today, Bukit Meriam Fort remains an important heritage landmark. Visitors can approach the fort site to soak in the historical atmosphere and appreciate the defensive heritage of the Kedah Kingdom that has endured through centuries. Late afternoon is the ideal time to visit when the weather is cooler.
