About This Destination

The Baling Clock Tower is a historic landmark situated in the heart of Baling town, Kedah. Erected to commemorate the Baling Talks held on 28 December 1955 — a significant event in Malaysia's history — between the British colonial administration, Tunku Abdul Rahman (later Malaysia's first Prime Minister), and Chin Peng (Secretary-General of the Malayan Communist Party). The Baling Talks marked a crucial turning point in Malaysia's path to independence. Although the negotiations did not result in a final agreement at the time, they laid the groundwork for the subsequent Ruhani Talks that ultimately led to Malaysia's independence on 31 August 1957. The clock tower serves as a lasting reminder of the importance of peaceful dialogue and diplomacy in nation-building. Strategically located in the town centre, the tower is surrounded by local shops and food stalls offering authentic Kedahan cuisine. Visitors can soak in the laid-back atmosphere of Baling town while exploring its historical significance. For a more enriching experience, visitors can combine their trip to the Baling Clock Tower with a visit to the nearby Baling District Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the local history and culture. The best time to visit is during the morning or late afternoon when the weather is more comfortable.
